Shared Sentiment and Mission

With a shared sentiment and mission, the first meeting of Veterans in Wetaskiwin was held on 3 March 1930 in Blackwell's Boot Shop. Membership numbered 51 that year and Wetaskiwin's group was destined to become Branch 86 of The Canadian Legion.  It's members proudly became part of a nation wide veteran's organization that was evolving into the foundational cornerstone of countless Canadian Communities, where members pledged to be the guardians of remembrance and veteran's welfare and t0 uphold that tradition of service by volunteering in the community to help those in need.

With World War II, the face of war and the challenges of the Legion changed, and Legion 86 met that challenge head on, reinforcing membership and support for returning veterans.  During the war years Legion 86 members, older veterans, began raising funds in preparation for the return of younger veterans.  By October 1947 Legion 86 had a new and larger official facility in Wetaskiwin for them to utilize.

Legion 86 was strengthened by its history of service and has been a feature of the Wetaskiwin community since its inception.

Over the last 94 years, that service included lobbying government on veteran's issues for pension and housing, providing aid to veterans, fundraising, public outreach, education, sponsoring youth and sporting events, and supporting the City and County of Wetaskiwin in whatever capacity it could.

Wetaskiwin Branch No. 86 Ladies Auxiliary was incorporated on November 19, 1947 - its historical motto Service and its main objective to support the branch.  This tireless group has provided fellowship with branch members and conducted copious fundraising events throughout the years, with 100% of funds donated to Legion projects and the community organizations that the Legion supports.  Read More about Ladies Auxiliary

Today Legion Branch 86 and the Ladies Auxiliary are striving to make a difference by helping Veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and their families get the care and support they deserve.

“Caring and giving makes the ordinary special.”

HMCS Wetaskiwin K175

HMCS Wetaskiwin (Pennant Number K175) was a warship, a Flower Class corvette, the first Pacific coast built corvette to enter service with the Royal Canadian Navy.  She was commissioned at Esquimalt, British Columbia on December 17, 1940 and served as a convoy escort in the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II.

Canadian Flower Class corvettes, serving with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the Second World War, were quite often named after communities because the RCN wanted to better represent the people and help establish a bond between the Navy and local communities across Canada.  That is how Alberta's third oldest city, Wetaskiwin, population 2200, got the privilege of having the corvette named HMCS Wetaskiwin.  She has an interesting story:
